Na'leen Concept Sketches 2008

Here's some more concept art from 2008, of another character from "The Legacy of Creation".

Early in 2008, I discovered "Zed", a cute little genocidal tragedy comic by Michel Gagne. When I ordered the first issue online, the paperback was shipped with an A5-sized slip of paper to keep it from folding accidentally. I was so stricken by the high quality and unusual texture of this paper that I found myself irrestibly compelled to sketch on it.

Hence this picture.

Na'leen Roloris-Dochzel is a childhood friend of Talin (the protagonist of TLOC). Unlike Talin, Na'leen has little interest in seeing the inhabited planets beyond the Falrine homeworld Dellar, and initially remains planetbound while her pal makes plans to stow away aboard a mining vessel and get a free offworld trip.

When "The Legacy of Creation" begins in the 37th century, Dellar is still fairly isolated from the larger Galactic community, and Falrine society is primarily agragarian in nature.
Na'leen's family is no exception.
Her clothing and mannerisms reflect her status as a member of a lower-middle class family with two parents, ten kids, and a large farm to support. She's tough, no-nonsense, and hardworking, with little time for distractions.
Even so, Na'leen makes time for friends like Talin (even if she doesn't approve of their own otherworldly interests), and for her father, who teaches her how to defend herself with a quarterstaff (Falrine society is largerly stable, but Dellar has a hefty supply of vicious wildlife).

On another tangent, this drawing is one of my few 'old' pictures that doesn't make me want to claw out my eyes in shame when I look at it. That may be because the proportions are manageable (though far from good), the watercolours turned out alright, or because I based Na'leen's facial features on a good source-Trixie from Disney's "The Fox and the Hound" (a popular source for my Falrines at that time).
