The Dresden Files-Dead Beat-Sue's Rampage by SpaceBoy969 The Dresden Files-Dead Beat-Sue's Rampage by SpaceBoy969
Some fanart for a pal of mine, who has a thing for "The Dresden Files".

Written by Jim Butcher, The Dresden Files are a series of novels by about a Chicago-based private detective called Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, who is also a wizard. I

In "Dead Beat" the fifth book in The Dresden Files, Dresden is pitted against a posse of insane necromancers who are attempting to use a ritual called the Darkhallow to feed off dead spirits and subsequently become small demigods. If they succeed, everyone in Chicago, Dresden included, is screwed. To stop them, Dresden uses the necromancers' own tricks against them, resurrects a dead Tyrranosaurus Rex (using the bones of "Sue" from the Field Museum of Natural History), and charges directly into the centre of the Darkhallow.

When I drew "Sue's Rampage", I was pressed for time, and hadn't read "Dead Beat" in a while. Consequently, I got several big details wrong ( A)the action takes place on a university picnic area, not a park; B) Neither Cowl nor Kumori, the hooded folks on the right, shoot at Sue; C) The Indian zombie's creator had been killed at that point, and the zombies themselves weren't active; D) the flying skull, Bob, didn't shoot fireballs at Dresden; and E) Butters, the man on Sue's tail, wasn't there-in the book, a young Spanish combat mage called Ramirez had been Dresden's wingman in the final battle against Cowl and company), and the final product is rather rough and crude as far as my digital art goes.

But hey, it's a start, and I fully intend to do more Dresden Files fanart (of a much higher quality) over the course of 2012.

Drawn and coloured in Adobe Photoshop CS3, over five hours.

awesome drawing, but Dead Beat is the 7th book in the series, not 5th like it says in the description- just an observation

All i gotta say is Poor Butters XD

This is fantastic, but my one nitpick is that Harry doesn't wear a hat. I know it's quite confusing, but he's said in the books he hates wearing hats.
The cover artist just keeps drawin' 'em on there.
SpaceBoy969 Featured By Owner Aug 21, 2012
He doesn't, does he? You're right; I think Harry brings it up in "Changes" (where he refuses to wear a Conquistador helmet), and a few of the other novels, and yet all the Dresden Files' cover art plonks a fedora on Harry's head without fail. It's probably cuz he's meant to be a magical hard-boiled detective, and they ALWAYS wear fedoras. Oh well. I'll make sure to keep Harry hatless in future Dresden Files fanart. ;)

This is fantastic! I love the colors and the spirit of the scene is there, even if some of the details are a little off. I can't wait to see more of your work!

Given enough time, I hope to do fanart for each and every book of the Dresden files, from Storm Front all the way to Ghost Story; there are plenty of visually iconic moments in all of them (ie: Dresden fending off Victor Sells' demon, the approach on the Shadowman's house, the Loup Garou's rampage through the police station, Dresden escaping Bianca's ball, the showdown with Nicodemus on a train, Dresden and Murphy fighting the White King, the storming of Arctis Tor...the list goes on and on... :spin: ), though as I said it'll take me a while to get stuff done for them. But this is not my last piece of Dresden Files fanart, I promise you that ;)

Here's a tidbit for you: WE SHALL BE SEEING SUE AGAIN BEFORE THE SERIES IS DONE, via Word of Jim. :D :D :D

Love it despite the inaccuracies!

Really!? :squee:

God, I hope so. It's high time someone took the fight to the Black Council, and Sue would be just the tool for the job :evillaugh:

Thanks for letting me know about that, ~myyrdneopia!

Jim has said, and I quote, "That's just too cool to use only once." Or something along those lines. :D

Sue!!!! :)

Probably my favorite scene in the whole series. :)
BatPhace Featured By Owner Jan 12, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
That's probably my favorite part of my favorite book out of the whole damn series, so you did good :XD: You may have gotten some things wrong, but damn it's still awesome work. AND it totally captures the moment in spirit if not in accuracy :D I love Butters and the smooshed zombies under Sue's feet. POLKA WILL NEVER DIE!!!!! :iconimhappyplz:
SpaceBoy969 Featured By Owner Jan 12, 2012
My personal favourite is Ghost Story, followed by Changes, but I still hold a special place in my heart for Dead Beat on account of its gloriously insane climax. POLKA WILL NEVER DIE!!!!! Indeed :headbang: [link] :headbang:

Oh i love all the books. But like you said Dead Beat holds a special place :D Something about Tyrannosaurus Bob there at the end... :happycry:

Wow - this is incredable! You've really paid exact attention to the details of the extract, though I don't think Harry was wearing a hat. Regardless - it's a nice touch, and the entire picture is very vibrant with life and movement. Wonderful stuff!
SpaceBoy969 Featured By Owner Jan 12, 2012
I've always wondered about Dresden's hat. Most of the cover art for the books tends to show him wearing one, and it would certainly fit in with the whole stereotypical P.I. image that he projects...but I'll be blowed if I can remember Jim Butcher explicitly specifying that Harry wears one  Guess it's just one of life's little mysteries

Oh, and thanks for the compliment, *Juubi-Ookamii! :handshake:
ManaMadeleine Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Yes. I often imagine him wearing a hat too, but only since I saw the coverart on the books. It is indeed a mystery why they put him wearing a hat, but regardless of whether he does or doesn't, it suits him and the picture is awesome. So you're welcome.
circlewircle Featured By Owner Jan 25, 2012
Harry doesn't wear a hat, but the editors put one on him in the cover art in the beginning to project a noir-ish vibe. Since then, it's kind of been a running joke with Jim since he every now and then references Harry needing a hat.
ManaMadeleine Featured By Owner Jan 25, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Yes - I did notice that. :)
Ashshadow Featured By Owner Aug 9, 2012
It was this very book that started it, in fact: word is, the artist got Harry's description partially mixed up with Grevane's. He noticed it afterwards, but kept putting (increasingly detailed)hats on Dresden as the series went on and on the reprints, mainly as a back-and-forth gag between him and Butcher.
All that aside, though, I absolutely love this picture. Sure, some of the details aren't quite exact, but it captures the book's craziness perfectly!
